S.G. Goodman Announces New Record, Single, and Tour by Christie McMenamin

S.G. Goodman has broken the news that she will be releasing a new LP, Planting By the Signs, out on June 20th. Her new single, “Fire Sign” can be found below.

Planting By the Signs will be the first record Goodman has released in three years. After a grueling, extensive touring schedule, Goodman experienced severe burnout and more than a few losses, such as the death of her best friend and dog, Howard, a friend, and a mentor, Mike. With all this weighing on her, it was time to stop for a bit.

Goodman took this time to reconnecting with nature and all that is bigger than us in the world. She notes the importance of stories, and how they are a constant fixture for her music:

“As an ‘old story keeper,’ I’ve centered myself around the idea that passing down stories and sayings connect us through the generations. This notion was a driving force in the creation of this album as a whole, as I was compelled to share the concept of planting by the signs with my nieces and nephews.”

(Planting by the signs is an old Appalachian wisdom; it’s the idea that “cutting your hair, or laying down shingles, are best timed to lunar and planetary cycles.”)

Goodman notes that this is “her best record yet.” With “Fire Sign” providing a glimpse of what’s to come, it’s clear she’s entered her new era.

CMAT, Queen of “Cuntry,” Announces New Record, Single, and Tour by Christie McMenamin

The wait begins: the inimitable CMAT, goddess of all things superlative, campy, and twangy has announced her forthcoming LP, Euro-Country, out on August 29th. The first single, “Running/Planning,” is out on streaming services now, as well as an incredible video on YouTube, linked below.

As she explains to NME,

“‘Running/Planning’ is about having to chase your own tail to be good enough to exist. It’s an abstracted view of societal pressure on women – specifically through a relationship lens: You start dating someone, you get engaged, you get married, you have kids etc., etc., etc… everything has to follow this linear pattern. (That’s the reason for the repetitive chorus!).”

She expands:

“And the minute you don’t follow that path, your mam starts giving out to you. That narrow path that everyone is supposed to be on…the minute you get outside of that, it gets incredibly stressful. And I don’t know anyone who is like, ‘Yeah, love this!'”

Typically CMAT, she has been gleefully running around London, plastering every inanimate object she come across or that takes her fancy with CMAT stickers. Emblazoned with the font of her new album cover, dodging prosecution and penalties, CMAT’s Instagram stories show every part of the journey. Her latest concoction is a sticker that reads “Lord, let that Tesla crash.”

New Music: Jack Van Cleaf, "Smoker" by Christie McMenamin

New Music: Jack Van Cleaf, “Smoker”

When Zach Bryan calls you a genius, you know you’ve made it.

Jack Van Cleaf released his first record, Fruit from the Trees after he graduated from college. He earned the praise of artists like Noah Kahan, opening for him on tour, Van Cleaf’s very first. “Rattlesnake,” his single, ended up on Spotify’s 2024 Best New Artist List. It’s this way that Bryan discovered Van Cleaf, even releasing his own cover. Now, you can hear the newest version of “Rattlesnake” as a duet with Bryan, which, incredibly, was Bryan’s idea, sending Van Cleaf a DM. Bryan expands,

“To become the best of friends with people through music in the city. Think that may be the point of all this. Jack & me re-recorded one of the best written songs of all time (Jack is a genius) and hope u guys listen to it.”

Van Cleaf will be releasing his new record JVC on May 9th, an album about “the vertigo of growing up, it’s about re-defining and re-understanding yourself.”

On “Smoker,” Van Cleaf explains, “Smoking is something I’ve put down and taken breaks from but come back to fairly consistently since I was sixteen.” One day, while conversing with someone, the thought hit him:

“‘Oh, I’m a smoker.’ It made me think about what I would’ve thought of myself as a little kid, because smokers scared me back then…the song is cataloging all the life you’ve lived in a way, some of which you might not be the most proud of—reckoning who you are now with who you were as a kid and who you thought you’d be when you grew up—recognizing the differences—wondering what needs to change.”

Tracklist for JVC:

1. Off to the Races

2. Piñata

3. Still
